EIGER2 HYBRID PHOTON COUNTING Detectors
Overview:
The EIGER2 detector is the latest masterpieces of DECTRIS AG. It features a newly designed sophisticated read-out system with dual energy discrimination that effectively suppresses background and improves signal-to-noise. Two analog circuits allow for simultaneous read and write operation with NO DEADTIME! As its precessor, the EIGER2 detector, it has a frame rates of 10Hz (EIGER2 R 1M) or 5Hz (EIGER2 R 4M), respectively, and a small pixelsize of only 75 microns (PILATUS3: 172 microns) and hence a larger amount of pixels as compared to a PILATUS3 detector of the same physical dimension.
marXperts now also offers full support for the EIGER2 series of detectors with our mardtb goniostat. In fact, the EIGER2 detectors are the perfect fit for the mardtb and data collection is fully integrated into our well-known data collection software.
The key advantages of using a EIGER2 detector with the mardtb are as follows:
- extremely short read-out time of 10 microseconds allows for fine φ-slicing
- very small pixel size of only 75 microns
- shutterless data collection
- extremely high sensitivity
- extremely low noise
- high dynamic range (32 bits)
- no point-spread due to direct conversion leading to small spots with better I/σ
- fast screening experiments
The extremely short read-out time paired with an excellent sensitivity makes the EIGER2 R series of detectors highly suitable for in-house data collection or crystal screening on home lab X-ray sources like Excillum Metaljet, the marYX2G X-ray data collection system or rotating anode generators. Thanks to the very short read-out time the usual way of collecting data with the EIGER2 detectors is to leave the shutter open until the end of data collection ("shutterless operation"). This reduces an instrument error factor and may be beneficial to the data quality.
Upgrade of mar345dtb to EIGER2 R 4M (mar4M) or EIGER2 R 1M:
Existing mar345dtb detector sytems can easily be upgraded with an EIGER2 detector, i.e. the mardtb can be used together with the EIGER2 R 4M or 1M detector. Due to its larger detector surface that eliminates requirements for collecting multiple data sets at 2-theta offsets, the EIGER2 R 4M detector clearly is your first choice. When using the small EIGER2 R 1M detector, it is possible to mount the detector in front of the mar345 detector. One can then easily take away the small EIGER2 detector and use the large mar345 image plate detector if there is a need for a large detector surface. For this special combination the range of movement of the distance translation stage of the mardtb goniostat is 22 to 150 mm for the EIGER2 R 1M detector and 120 to 425 mm for the mar345 detector.

Application note:
An exiting experiment has been done with a mar4M system consisting of the EIGER(1) R 4M detector and a mardtb goniostat. The setup has been used to collect a complete data set of a large protein with 350 amino residues to high resolution (1.5 Ang.) in just 30 minutes with extraordinary quality. Please see the application note AN07Sep17 for further details.
